The main character in my WiP (and pretty much everyone else in the book, too) is in love with a fictional band I made up, formerly known as Idioteque 1 I’ve written so much about the band (describing their sound, nailing down their influences, creating a wildly charismatic frontman, even writing a fake interview with them) that this week I decided to do a Very Nerdy thing and create a playlist that represents the band’s debut album, which I named Behold! The MelonĀ 2.
It started as kind of a lark, but actually I found making the playlist to be 1) fun (perhaps most importantly), but also 2) an interesting new way to engage with my book before I dive into yet another round of revisions and edits.
Anyway, making this playlist has had me dancing at my desk all week. If you enjoy noisy head-nodding rock, I think you might enjoy it, too. Take a listen:
What about you? Have you made up bands, books, or movies in your work? Have you made a poster, flyer, zine or anything IRL to go along with it? If so PLEASE link! I’d love to see it 3!
- They are pending another name, after astute beta reader and Much Better At Googling Necessary Stuff For Books Guru Lindsey Roth Culli pointed out that Idioteque is such a genius band name that it is, in fact, a real life band’s name. Grr. ↩
- How 90s is that? I love it. ↩
- And if not, I really encourage you to try! ↩

This is so cool! I love you and your nerdy dedication. :) Will be jamming to this tonight!
:D Thanks lady. This mix would be GREAT with the windows down on the ride home!
OZMA!!!! If I only had a heart! The playlist rocks.
I knew you’d love that! <3
Oooh, I can’t wait to listen to this playlist later. And gosh do I love this post, because I can relate 100%…
I have totally dreamed up fictional bands of my own. Proof: In a stand-alone WIP I’m toying with, my MC and his two best guy buddies are all obsessed with a band called Opulence–very 80s hair metal with a bit of a glam rock vibe. I went as far as naming Opulence’s debut album (The Pinnacle of Cynical) and writing lyrics to several tracks (which the characters quote throughout the ms). While drafting I thought I was wasting time, but I think it actually added life to the story. The band feels so realized, that the characters obsessions with it seem entirely natural.
Lastly: I wish “Behold! The Melon” was a real album. That name is killer.
