RTW: I Love You but I’ve Chosen Erudite

by sarahenni on May 23, 2012

Welcome to another Road Trip Wednesday, a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway posts a weekly writing- or reading-related question and anyone can answer it on their own blogs. Check out their post for links to other Highwayers’ answers!

This week’s topic is:

What Faction from Veronica Roth’s Divergent & Insurgent would you be?

Art by C-resta. Click for link

Can’t stop, won’t stop! As a devoted member of Ravenclaw, I knew from the first description of Erudite that they were my peeps. So, even though it turns out Erudite is headed up by [SPOILER!] some ethically twisted psychos, I’m holding out for redemption.

Erudite’s chosen path as a faction reminds me of the Patton Oswalt joke: “We’re science: we’re all about coulda, not shoulda.” When left alone with the pure possibility of what information can mean, people can be dangerous. That’s why factions like Erudite only work well in concert with others, those who can provide a more practical perspective.

But I’m hopeful that in the third and final Divergent book, Erudite will get their chance to use all those beautiful brains for good!

What about you? What faction would you be? Do you think Erudite is going to get the chance to redeem us unrepentant brainiacs??

As a fellow Ravenclaw, my immediate pull is to Erudite, of course. However, I always end up Candor, because I can’t seem to keep that filter going between my brain and my mouth…

I find my own pursuit of knowledge often goes down the path of “knowledge for knowledge’s sake”–I want to know because I want to know. While there’s nothing wrong with satisfying one’s curiosity, I think this is the image Erudite has in the novels: so concerned with useless info they’ve become insular, caught up in their own little world with no thought for what’s going on around them, or willing to pursue their desire for knowledge-for-knowledge’s-sake at any cost. So I think you’re right; Erudite needs to be tempered with Amity or even Abnegation. :)

I tested as Erudite, and as much as I love knowledge, I’m courage all the way (which would put me in Gryffindor over Ravenclaw). So Dauntless it is. :)

Erudite would be my second choice and is a big part of my divergent real life.

Hello, fellow Erudite and Ravenclaw member! :) I would definitely be Erudite too, because I love learning way too much. Truth be told, I’d be Divergent with a couple of other factions mixed in in small measure. But Dauntless? Way too chicken for that, unfortunately.

I think the pursuit of knowledge in itself is a good thing – but it can turn bad if you go to far or misuse the information (aka what Erudite did/are doing). I apparently lean to dauntless but there I feel it is the same thing of having a balance. Courage is good but using violence in every situation isn’t.

I went for Ravenclaw in Harry Potter so I knew straight away I’d like the idea of Erudite. Amity and Dauntless are potential factions but it’s learning all the way for me. I’d be very settled in that library they have.

I’m totally Ravenclaw, but, strangely enough, I’m not Erudite AT ALL. I’m totally Amity, like, down to my core.

As a fellow Ravenclaw, I totally thought Erudite were my peeps! The Divergent test did not agree with me and put me in Amity!

Upon further reflection though, I can see why and I think I kind of agree. So I think I would be born into Erudite but choose Amity; yep, I’m a Faction transfer. I just started Insurgent, and while I don’t agree with all the Amity-hippie ways, their situation is kind of sweet. They’re outside, everyone gets along/is pleasant, there’s fresh food, etc. etc. I actually kind of found myself resentful of Tris’ disparaging remarks!

But to answer your question, I do hope there’s redemption for Erudite! They are, after all, still my people – just some of them are very questionably “misguided” (or straight up cray-cray, jury is still out). I’m a Ravenclaw through and through. :)
